What Is RSO Life Level 1?

REAL Science Odyssey – Life Level 1 (RSO Life) is a year-long, secular homeschool life science curriculum. Students explore the foundational concepts of life science through an incremental series of engaging lessons—beginning with the definition of life itself and expanding to the incredible diversity of living organisms that share our world.

Math and hands-on labs are woven throughout the course, giving students opportunities to apply the scientific method and reinforce their understanding through experimentation and observation.

RSO Life guides elementary-age learners as they Read, Explore, Absorb, and Learn life science:

  • Read – Fun, engaging readings introduce key ideas and details for each chapter. The text is designed to be read aloud, encouraging discussion and curiosity.
  • Explore – Carefully crafted hands-on experiments demonstrate life science concepts, helping students observe and record nature’s patterns.
  • Absorb – Lessons engage visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners to ensure lasting understanding.
  • Learn – Students don’t just read about science—they do science!

What REAL Science Odyssey Is Not
  • Not a random collection of labs — it’s a complete, incremental homeschool science curriculum.
  • Not dry or boring — students will dig, sing, play, and explore the natural world firsthand.
  • Not religious — all REAL Science Odyssey courses are secular and based on valid, empirical science.

Children learn real life science in the real world—and they’ll use the real scientific method every step of the way.

Who Can Use RSO Life?

RSO Life is designed for grades K–2 and leverages young learners’ natural curiosity about plants, animals, and the world around them.

Through songs, experiments, and outdoor observation, students begin by exploring their own bodies and gradually expand their study to the broader animal and plant kingdoms.

No prior science background is required—RSO Life is written for both beginners and parents without formal science training.

Science Topics Covered

RSO Life introduces fundamental biological concepts, with each unit building on the previous one. Every lesson integrates scientific reasoning, experimentation, and critical discussion to deepen understanding of how living systems work.

Science Skills Developed

In addition to core life science knowledge, students will build essential skills, including:

  • Applying the scientific method
  • Critical thinking and logical reasoning
  • Accurate observation and documentation
  • Presenting and interpreting scientific data
  • Reading and understanding informational texts

Lab Experiments

No life science course is complete without hands-on exploration! Students will:

  • Examine a bird egg—a cell large enough to see without a microscope
  • Test how fast a message travels from eyes to brain to hand
  • Compare a garden snail to its mollusk relatives
  • Dissect different types of seeds to understand how plants grow
  • …and much more!

Each experiment includes:

  • A detailed supply list
  • Step-by-step instructions
  • Safety precautions (when needed)
  • Lab sheets for implementing the scientific method

Students will:

  • Formulate hypotheses
  • Record observations and results
  • Draw conclusions
  • Reinforce understanding through post-lab questions

Planning and Scheduling

Research shows that deep exploration of a single subject leads to stronger scientific understanding.

Each REAL Science Odyssey curriculum is designed as a full-year course, including:

  • 36 weeks of material (for 1–2 science days per week)
  • A suggested weekly schedule
  • A weekly supply list
  • Instructor pages for lesson guidance
  • Optional student pages for additional learners

Refer to the Try Before You Buy file for a complete detailed list of the lab supplies needed to complete this course.

Most supplies are normal household items that you can find either in your home or at the grocery, craft, or big-box store. You’ll also need a 3-ring binder for lab and notebook pages. Field guides to your local birds, insects, and plants will also be helpful.

Since our homeschool life science curriculum is hands-on, some of your “supplies” will include critters–insects, worms, snails–that you find or dig up. You will need access to an outdoor space (garden, yard, park) where these things live. All our experiments are designed to avoid harming these test subjects.

Uncommon Supplies Needed for Course Labs:

Science Thermometer- The liquid in good science thermometer goes down on its own, unlike the liquid in a medical thermometer, which must be shaken down. Some kitchen thermometers will work, but most do not go low enough. You will need a thermometer that will go down to 30° F or 0° C.

Butterfly house- homemade or purchased one from online science supply stores (comes with a certificate to get five butterfly larvae).

Live critters- garden snails, earthworms, butterfly larvae, spiders (optional), isopods (aka pill bugs or roly-polies)

Glass eyedropper

Triple beam balance (optional)

Binoculars- avoid the $10 ones, but you don’t have to spend $100.

Don’t have time to search around? Home Science Tools offers kits containing the harder-to-find materials you need for each REAL Science Odyssey curriculum.
