Teaching Children about 9/11: Free Downloadable Unit Study

flag final

On September 11, some parents and teachers may find themselves at a loss for words when it comes to helping their children understand a scary event that many of us lived through. To help you prepare for teaching young learners about 9/11, we would like to offer our community the resources you will find in this free download from our History Quest: United States book. We sincerely hope that the history resources in this FREE unit, “The History, The Heroes, and the Helpers” will help parents help their children make sense of what was going on during such a world-changing event abd it helps you approach the topic of September 11th with your child in an age appropriate and reassuring manner.

The Suggested Reading booklist and the September 11th chapter itself are designed to be appropriate for students ages 7 to 12, but as always we recommend pre-reading to make sure the material is suitable for your child’s specific situation. We wanted to include as many children’s books on this topic as possible, listed in order of relative appropriateness for sensitive readers. We also recommend checking your local library for books!

Like in all of our History Quest books, readers can take a "History Hop" back in time to meet those that lived through the chapter's era. In History Quest: United States, Chapter 24: September 11th, you find yourself on a WQED soundstage in 2002 with Khalid, a lighting technician for the Neighborhood of Make-Believe, as he explains his experiences assisting Mr. Rogers and seeing the impact of the events of the year prior.
